Wet slip or dry storage: What is the right Treasure Coast boat storage for me?

Apr 24, 2026 | Blog

The first question a new Port St. Lucie boater might ask–right after “How fast does it go?” is the question of, “Where am I going to keep it?”

How you choose to store your vessel is critical to maintaining your vessel’s integrity. Boaters have two main storage options: wet slip and dry slip storage. But which is best for the seasonal Florida resident or an every-weekend tarpon fighter? The answer will depend on your boat, your location, and how often you use your vessel. The experts at Meridian Marina will walk you through what is not a debate of which option is “better,” but the unique features of both types of storage to help you make the best-informed decision.

What is wet slip storage?

Wet slip storage is a way to store your boat in the water. Using a wet slip is different from mooring your vessel – instead of tying your boat to the dock, you “park” it in a dedicated berth.

Wet slips usually have a U shape, with a dock surrounding the boat on three sides. This design protects your vessel from heavy wakes, and it also makes boarding much easier. Some wet slips offer a roof to help protect the boat, whereas others are uncovered. Wet slips may even have floating docks, which shift gently with the water levels to maintain proper tension on your dock lines.

Wet storage is a strong option for frequent boaters. When you store your boat in a wet slip, you can take it out at any time, without the extra step of removing it from a rack. Wet slips are also a good choice for boaters with larger vessels, as most dry slip storage facilities have height and weight limits.

However, wet slip boat storage does come with some drawbacks. Leaving your boat in a wet slip exposes it to the elements. Algae, barnacles, pests, and debris can build up on your hull, and UV rays from the sun can fade your gelcoat and upholstery in an uncovered slip. That means that wet slip storage requires more hull maintenance than dry slip storage, and your boat will rust more quickly. Wet slips also offer less protection against thieves, vandals, and extreme weather.

What is dry boat storage?

Dry boat storage–also known as a dry slip–is when a boat is kept on land in a covered building, either in a “parking spot” or a storage rack. Dry slip storage provides extra protection for your boat by keeping it protected from water, sun, vandals, and hurricanes – a major consideration for Palm City and Port Lucie boat storage.

Dry slip boat storage is a great option for anyone who is concerned with preserving their boat’s appearance and performance, and it is ideal if you are not going to use your boat for a few months. When your vessel is in a dry slip, you know that it’s in a locked and monitored environment. You also won’t have to worry about debris, and if a hurricane blows through, your boat is safe and sound within a structure rated for hurricane defense.

Dry boat storage can come with one tradeoff: You can’t just take your boat out on a whim. When you choose dry slip storage, you need to contact your marina before your trip. The staff needs time to remove your boat from their storage barn and launch it into the water. The upside is that some marinas–like those of the VIP Marinas group–make it a mission for this step to be as convenient as punching your arrival time into an app like Speedy Dock, then the team will have your boat ready, fueled, and stocked with ice, bait, and necessities before you ever arrive.

wet slip vs dry storage

The best Treasure Coast boat storage solution for you will ultimately depend on your priorities and how much you use your boat. If you’re on the water every week, wet slip storage may be the easiest option, but if you’re a casual boater, dry boat storage is the best way to protect your vessel when you’re not using it.
